Some minor preparation can make a big difference on the day.  Here are my tips on how to prepare for a successful portrait session.

First, collect any images that illustrate a style or theme that you like.  Look around online and forward me any ideas that you really like.  If you are having a family or group photography session, try to discuss what you are looking for together.  I'll then try to generate a photo session plan to include these aspects.

For children's photography, it helps if you prepare them for the session; explaining what's going to happen and involving them in the discussion of ideas for games or props, that we can use.  Photo sessions are really fun and it's great if the fun can start before I arrive.  During the session it's best to be relaxed about your child's behavior, to ensure they remain engaged.   I have children of my own and I know that the opportunity for tantrums or showing off in front of a visitor can exsist.  Please know I am a really patient, easy going person and I rarely get phased by these kind of behaviors!

It's also worth thinking about clothing and props to be used during the photography session.  Some tips to consider:

  •  Clothing is really a matter of personal choice, although for family or group portraits a relatively uniform or toning color  scheme works best.
  •  Under most circumstances white should be avoided as a clothing choice, unless it is being used as an accent color such as under a blazer, or under another shirt, ect.  It can draw the eye away from the subject and it can also "blow out" a photo.  There is always exceptions to the rule though!!!  If you are considering wearing white please consult with me first.
  •   Dark clothing typically works best
  •  If it's cooler outside, long sleeves are recommened.  With sleeves your eye will be drawn to your face..not your arms.
  • Shorts will make you look...well short!
  • Heavily patterned clothing, clothing with images such as charachters or logos can be problematic as it can draw focus away from face
  •  Jazzy hats, scarves, winter coats with fluffy hoods, blankets, favorite toys, or dress-up clothes can make for some fun striking contrasting accessorites
  • If you play an instrument, play a sport,  or have a favorite pastime, related props can help personalize the image and create lasting memories (I have a photo of my child with his favorite "blankie" when he was a year old, it's one of my favorite photos, because "blankie" was in the pic!  Interestingly enough, at the time I really didn't want it in the photo...)
  • Finally, family pets are welcome additions to photography sessions!
